Top 10 Best TV Shows Of 2021
10. Them
Kicking off my list at number 10 is the horror anthology series from Amazon Prime, Them.
The series follows an African-American family who move into a predominantly white, picket-fenced neighborhood in LA during the 1950s and uncovers all of the very true and very real horrors black people faced during this time period in the US.
With an added element of the supernatural, it all made for a rather petrifying experience.
09. Squid Game
In at number nine is the most talked-about TV series of the year – ‘Squid Game’.
The South Korean Netflix survival series has been seen by more than 142 million households globally, and became such a phenomenon that the series spawned Halloween costumes, hilarious memes, and even copycat competitions.
‘Squid Game’ made us all wonder how long we’d last in the survival game – for me, I’d have walked out as soon as I found out that I was sharing a room with 455 others.
08. Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso makes his cheesy entrance into number eight on the list, bringing us a seriously heartwarming and hilarious second series on Apple TV+.
Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham and the rest of the superb cast from the sport’s workplace ensured that viewers got that much-needed hug of comedy gold we really needed this year.
07. Succession (Season 3)
Making their grand season three return late in 2021 was the Roy family from ‘Succession’, and their tit-for-tat family goings-on ensured that they claimed the number seven spot.
Series creator Jesse Armstrong managed to string together another fiery season revolving around who will eventually take over Waystar RoyCo, with great back-handed performances from Brian Cox and the rest of the bickering family.
06. Sex Education (Season 3)
Season three of ‘Sex Education’ on Netflix was just so incredibly fun to watch that it would be remiss of us if we didn’t include it in our top ten.
Basically a live-action, UK version of Netflix’s animated series ‘Big Mouth’, the third season managed to take the teenage dramedy to dizzying heights of emotional beats and pretty outlandish happenings.
05. Only Murders in the Building
In at number five, are the three crime podcast-loving sleuths from ‘Only Murders in the Building’ on Disney+.
Once again proving that Steve Martin and Martin Short is a match made in comedy heaven, with a little help from Selena Gomez and a cast of celebrity cameos, the storyline was full of twists and turns and was one of our definite favourites of the year.
04. The Underground Railroad
Amazon Prime’s ‘The Underground Railroad’ takes up the fourth spot on our list. Getting Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins from ‘Moonlight’ and ‘If Beale Street
Could Talk’ on board as the series creator was the first stroke of genius of the series, with everything that followed nothing short of transfixing.
An incredibly touching yet harrowing miniseries, this might have been a title that slipped under your radar this year.
03. The White Lotus
And so, we’re into the top three picks of the year. Taking bronze is a series that surprised us all with its dry wit and abrasive social commentary – ‘The White Lotus’.
Available to stream on Sky or NOW, this runaway HBO success served as a fly-on-the-wall look at how some of the richest, most privileged white people live, ensuring that anyone who gets in their way ends up paying a heavy price.
Plus, the icon that is Jennifer Coolidge is in the mix, serving up some of the best moments of the series.
02. it’s a Sin
In at number two is Channel 4’s timeless limited series and the newest creation from Russell T. Davies.
‘It’s a Sin’ is based around the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the ’80s and early ’90s, documenting all of the highs and the devastating lows when it came to how gay men were perceived during this period of time.
Still relevant in today’s divisive world, it saw a diverse cast of actors lead one of the most poignant series of the year.
01. Mare of Easttown
And finally, wrapping up our list of the top 10 TV shows of 2021 is the one and only Kate Winslet. Starring as always-vaping police detective Mare Sheehan in HBO’s ‘Mare of Easttown’,
Winslet played a troubled yet headstrong woman who is tasked with solving a murder in her sleepy Philadelphia suburb.
Earning an Emmy Award for her role in the series, it was the raw and emotional aspect of her character that made her all the most relatable to viewers.
A truly immersive crime drama that says with you after you’ve watched it, with the odd comedic moment thanks to her supporting cast member Jean Smart as Mare’s mother, you can watch our best TV series of the year if you have a Sky or NOW subscription.
